tips

In the present economy, it is more important than ever for businesses and organizations to promote themselves or their products. The solution is to do so more efficiently—without sacrificing quality or impact. Below are some tips that we've found successful, depending on the objectives of the design. Talk to your designer or printer about them.

  • Size: Could the size of the printed piece be made smaller to accommodate more to a sheet when printing?
  • Paper stock: Could the paper be a little less thick or not as bright? If you deal directly with your printer, ask about the type of paper they buy in large quantities ("house stock"), which cost you less than similar papers.
  • Inks: If you are printing a large quantity, consider printing in only 1 or 2 colors, and/or using colored paper stock. Some designers, although few, are able to creatively mix 2 ink colors to make a piece look as if it had been printed in 3 spot colors or in full color. See one of our samples that accomplishes this.
  • Quantity: If you often end up with many unneeded printed pieces, reassess the quantity the next time you print. Although a higher quantity in offset printing yields a smaller cost per piece, if you do not need the additional copies, you are just spending extra money.
  • Type of printing: When printing a small quantity, a digital press (high-quality color copies) typically costs less than an offset press. Keep in mind that varnishes and spot colors are unavailable with this option, and paper choices are limited.
  • Postage: Save on postage by maintaining your mailing lists to avoid undeliverable and duplicate addresses.
  • Environmental impact: Printing on "green" paper sends the message that you care for the environment, which may be a factor in your message.
