Paper Smarts

Case: The client was holding a banquet and needed programs (we had also designed the invitation package that was mailed). In pricing the first option (8.5x11 folding in half, two ink colors, white paper stock) against an alternate option (the result), it was found that although they were completely different, the costs would actually end up the same.

Solution: The resulting option was a three-color job on different weights and colors of translucent papers that matched almost identically to the client's logo colors, purple and teal. The colored sheets did not print, and those that did were translucent platinum. The finishing touch, the binding, was a hand-tied, sheer teal ribbon.

When using specialty paper, even paper that you have used before, always do a physical test run on the equipment that will be running it. Laser and digital printers vary and may not accept certain weights or types of papers, as was the case with this job, resulting in it being printed on a press. It originally was to be run digitally, but due to prior experience and knowledge with specialty paper, this back-up plan was implemented beforehand to allow it to be printed on a press and still allow for sufficient drying time.
